Now with the ever-going pandemic concerns, it has inspired me to write this post about some of my go-to herbs to use in everyday ways to keep the immune system of myself and my children very healthy. Although none of these listed have been known to cure COVID19 itself, they have been helpful in providing a great defense to keeping the body balanced and protected. Maybe it can help you and yours too. Below are five antiviral and antibacterial herbs that naturally boost your immune system.
1. Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) – Elderberry is used as a remedy for viral infections of any type but often for the flu. Elder stimulates the circulation of blood, causing the body to release toxins from the pores; effectively cleansing the body. Elderberry syrup is the common delivery method and is sold commonly like this. Although it is believed that the raw plant is best; leaves, roots, seeds, and berries of Elderberry contain cyanide-producing compounds and should not be consumed without extracting and preparing properly.
2. Garlic (Allium sativum) – Garlic is considered to be more effective than penicillin against several types of bacteria. It is gentle on the digestion system and only fights against radical bacteria that is detected in the body; leaving the natural bacteria unaffected. Garlic can be used as a tincture, capsule, infused in oil, or simply added to your diet to be effective.
3. Usnea (Usnea barbata) – This lichen is antibacterial and antifungal. A powerful natural antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections, strep and staph infections, respiratory and sinus infections as well as fungal infections like yeast and athlete’s foot. Usnea is best used as a tincture because it is absorbed more evenly throughout the body; combined with drinks like orange juice, water, or freshly juiced vegetables to enhance its benefits. Great for recovering smokers or for people with a vulnerability to asthma attacks and pneumonia. No known precautions are known, but consult an herbalist before using during pregnancy.
4. Astragalus Root (Astragalus membranaceous) – Astragalus is one of the antiviral herbs that works very well with boosting the immune system. Taken internally, either as a capsule, tincture, or by adding it to soup; astragalus root is known to increase your body’s defense against most common viruses. Astragalus root is best used as a preventative herb, so take it during flu season or before going places with large crowds of people.
5. Sage (Salvia officinalis) – Approximately 900 species and many varieties belong to the Sage genus, Salvia. Sage is a medicinal herb that has been used for centuries. It has antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antidiabetic effects that have been researched with the intentional benefits more specifically to Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and hyperlipidemia. However, there has not been any official clinical trials reported to support these remedies for long term cure. There are many different types of sage, but most varieties can be also used for balancing cholesterol, obesity, and menopausal symptoms.
